Between Teens is designed to increase participants’ knowledge about their own reproductive health, and to equip them with tools and information to utilize their local medical community to meet their health care needs.

Our model is distinct in Memphis, TN, because it merges reproductive health education with direct clinical health services. This unique integration informs and supports adolescents in making healthy decisions regarding their reproductive health. During a Between Teens session, reproductive health information is delivered in an interactive group setting co-facilitated by a nurse practitioner specializing in adolescent reproductive health.  Participants spend 6-8 hours learning about such topics as reproductive anatomy and physiology, menstrual cycles, birth control options, sexually transmitted diseases, and obtaining reproductive health care services. 

Participants are guided in developing a personal reproductive health plan, giving them a portable plan for making decisions that affect the rest of their lives.  Participants are offered an individual reproductive health clinical visit which can include a comprehensive gynecological exam, as well as information on family planning options and HIV/AIDS and STI testing. 

Program components of Between Teens are consistent with the Characteristics of Effective Curriculum Based Programs That Prevent Teen Pregnancy published by The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy.
